Wine To Water internships are part-time (15-20 hours), unpaid internships located in Boone, NC that give you real world experience in working for a non-profit. From communications, to international operations, development, volunteer management, and administration, interns are a valued part of the Wine To Water team, a critical component to the work, and are highly involved within the organization.

Administrative Interns

Internal Audit

In this position, you will assist with business administration and donor record management for a $1M nonprofit organization. This internship requires you to be flexible in this role and be able to move from task-to-task while remaining organized.

Some of the activities you will be performing with this internship include, but are not limited to:

  • Accessing, synthesizing, and processing confidential records
  • Verifying accuracy of financial records
    • Ensure matching records in Donor System and QuickBooks accounting software
    • Run financial reports and verify that transactions are accurately classified
    • Ensure that printed and digital records are filed for each transaction
    • Provide assistance to interns, staff regarding classifying expenditures
  • Reconcile financial transactions in QuickBooks accounting software

    • Print bank and credit card statements for reconciliation
    • Reconcile accounts monthly and ensure that transactions recorded in QuickBooks accounting software match bank statement
  • Assist with annual audit & tax return and nonprofit certifications

  • Maintain inventory of merchandise

Gift Entry Intern

In this position, you will assist with donor record management for a $1M nonprofit organization with more than 13,000 supporters. This internship requires you to be flexible in this role and be able to move from task-to-task while remaining organized.

Some of the activities you will be performing with this internship include, but are not limited to:

  • Accessing, synthesizing, and processing confidential donor records
  • Processing donations via bank deposit and remote deposit system
  • Maintaining digital record of donations
    • Process cash, check, wire transfer, PayPal, credit card and in-kind donations
    • Apply correct accounting & development tags to each transaction
    • Issue Tax Receipts and year-end statements
  • Oversee multi-platform corporate matching gift system

    • Access corporate and third-party giving platforms
    • Analyze reports
    • Accurately record transactions in Donor System & QuickBooks accounting software
    • Maintain spreadsheet detailing gifts
  • Create & Issue invoices

Travel & Expense Coordinator Intern

In this position, you will assist with business administration for a $1M nonprofit organization. This internship requires you to be flexible in this role and be able to move from task-to-task while remaining organized. Some of the activities you will be performing with this internship include, but are not limited to: tracking all employee travel, making travel arrangements (hotel, airfare, etc), assisting staff with completing Travel Authorization & Expense Reimbursement forms, verifying all information and receipts, contacting staff to submit missing receipts or expense explanations, and recording transactions in QuickBooks accounting software, as directed. You will also develop and improve forms, verify accuracy of expense reports and receipts, maintain printed financial records, and assist with making payments.

Communication Interns

Broadcast

Wine To Water is seeking a highly committed individual to serve as a Broadcast Intern. This individual will play an integral role in developing both long and short form video content that tells the stories of the WTW community and the individuals whose lives are being impacted through clean water initiatives. This individual will work closely with the Communications Director to conceptualize, develop and complete projects on deadline, collaborate with the Communications team regarding strategy and tactical implementation, and adhere to rigorous standards of quality, creativity and storytelling. This individual will be expected to show initiative in producing original content that aligns with organizational goals. This position will primarily work in post-production, but may be needed to assist with local productions as shoots arise. This position will provide the opportunity to complete multiple short and long-form content pieces for use on a demo reel.

Graphic Design

Wine To Water is seeking a highly committed individual to serve as a Graphic Design Intern. This individual will play an integral role in developing dynamic and compelling visual content that helps to tell the stories of the WTW community and the individuals whose lives are being impacted through clean water initiatives. This individual will work closely with the Communications Director to conceptualize, develop and complete projects on deadline, collaborate with the Communications team regarding strategy and tactical implementation and adhere to rigorous standards of quality, creativity and storytelling. This individual will be expected to show initiative in producing original content that aligns with organizational goals. This position will primarily work in post-production, but may be needed to assist with in-house productions to accomplish the vision of specific projects. Content to be produced with be for web, print and social purposes. The position will provide the opportunity to complete multiple content elements for a portfolio.

Social Media

Wine To Water is seeking a highly committed individual to serve as a Social Media Intern. This individual will play an integral role in managing the social media channels that help to connect the WTW community and reach out to a broader audience. This individual will work closely with the Communications Director to conceptualize, develop, complete and execute a social media calendar on deadline, collaborate with the Communications team regarding strategy and tactical implementation and adhere to rigorous standards of quality, creativity and storytelling. This individual will be expected to show initiative in producing original content that aligns with organizational goals, as well as respond and interact with the WTW social community. This position will be required to be present in the WTW office daily during normal working days. The position will provide the opportunity to show initiative and develop expertise in managing the social media platforms of a non-profit organization.

Writing

Wine To Water is seeking a highly committed individual to serve as a Writing Intern. This individual will play an integral role in developing both long and short form written content that tells the stories of the WTW community and the individuals whose lives are being impacted through clean water initiatives. This individual will work closely with the Communications Director to conceptualize, develop and complete projects on deadline, collaborate with the Communications team regarding strategy and tactical implementation and adhere to rigorous standards of quality, creativity and storytelling. This position will require interviewing subjects in person and by other means. Content to be produced will be narrative storytelling, campaign messaging, social messaging, as well as other promotional materials and press releases. This individual will be expected to show initiative in producing original content that aligns with organizational goals. The position will provide the opportunity to complete multiple short and long-form content pieces for a portfolio.

Web Development

Wine To Water is seeking a highly committed individual to serve as a Web Development Intern. This individual will play an integral role in developing the website platform that tells the stories of the WTW community and the individuals whose lives are being impacted through clean water initiatives. They will work closely with the Communications Director to conceptualize, develop and complete projects on deadline, collaborate with the Communications team regarding strategy and tactical implementation and adhere to rigorous standards of quality, creativity, and storytelling. This individual will be expected to show initiative in producing original ideas that align with organization goals and are executed on time with attention to quality and detail. The position will provide the opportunity to assist in developing web platforms that can be used in a future as examples of your work. Be prepared to demonstrate examples of your work.

Development Program Interns

Campaign Coordinator

In this position, you will assist with fundraising campaigns and events for Wine To Water. This internship requires you to be flexible in this role and be able to move from task-to-task while remaining organized. Some of the activities you will be performing with this internship include, but are not limited to: corresponding with campaigners and third party event hosts, assisting with event planning, managing online campaigns, becoming very knowledgeable of our donor and fundraising platform and providing assistance, training, and how-to guides to campaigners, donors, other interns and staff, sending materials to event hosts/campaigners, tracking campaign stats and following up post event/campaign.

Creative Development Intern

In this position, you will assist with fundraising and development efforts for Wine To Water. This internship requires you to be flexible in this role and be able to move from task-to-task while remaining organized. Some of the activities you will be performing with this internship include, but are not limited to: developing targeted donor messages and email campaigns, tracking all donor outreach, planning donor communication and recognition, assisting with donor communication via phone, written letters, emails, and meetings, identifying new funding avenues, assisting with writing proposals and grants, and analyzing reports for donor trends.

Donor Relations

In this position, you will assist with donor record management for a $1M nonprofit organization. This internship requires you to be flexible in this role and be able to move from task-to-task while remaining organized. Some of the activities you will be performing with this internship include, but are not limited to: recording & processing donations, maintaining an accurate database of more than 13,000 supporters, overseeing corporate matching gifts, issuing tax receipts and statements to donors, possessing a knowledge of accounting tags for donations, and collaborating with Nonprofit Administration Intern, Development Intern, and staff for accurate reporting.

International Operations Interns

International Program Intern (IPI)

The IPIs will be assigned to a specific country/region in which WTW programs are either ongoing or in development. They will focus on this country/region for the duration of their internship by assisting the International Operations Director in program management.

Requirements:

  • Program organization & file management (program budget, proposals and reports, technical resources)
  • Donor report management & following up communications
  • Grant research & development
  • Presentation creation
  • Country/region specific research (demographics, WaSH techs, cultural studies, government reports, etc...)
  • IPIs will come away with a better understanding of what it takes to manage an international program, how an international interdependent team works together, and how specific WaSh solutions are used in the field.

Internal Communications Intern

The ICI will not be focused on any particular program, however they must have a basic understanding of each international program and its interconnectedness to the needs of other WTW departments. In doing so, their primary responsibility will be to work with each IPI to gather, create, and connect relevant information, stories, and ideas to other WTW departments; specifically the development and communications teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct pre/post trip interviews with WTW staff and volunteers
  • Craft stories from the information gathered and connect it to the necessary departments
  • Collect media (photo/video) and ready it for social media/web promotion
  • Work closely with fellow creative development and communications writing interns to develop systems and process to increase communication flow
  • The ICI will have the opportunity to sharpen their interviewing, writing, editing, and overall communication skills. They will gain experience in managing and meeting deadlines and ultimately come away with multiple written pieces ready for their portfolio.

Volunteer Program Interns

Student Chapters Intern

As the Student Chapter Intern you would be overseeing all of the current student chapters in the nation and bridging the gap between those chapters and headquarters.- helping to guide them and their advisers, supporting their upcoming events, and getting them connected to volunteer trips. This position also helps new chapters navigate getting started on their campuses and creating that relationship and connection with them. Recruiting other schools/universities to start student chapters would also be a part of this role.

Volunteer Recruiter

As the Volunteer Recruiter, you will be looking for future volunteers and building relationships with high potential organizations, groups, programs, businesses, etc. seeking to introduce them to Wine To Water and form long term service trip partnerships with them. You will assist the Director of Volunteer Programs with developing a recruitment strategy for the volunteer program and work with the rest of the staff to identify these high potential partnerships.

Volunteer Coordinator

As the Volunteer Coordinator you will be working with all of our current volunteers managing and coordinating all of the steps necessary to get them accepted as a volunteer and onto one of our service trips. You will also be involved with post-trip continued engagement. You will assist the Director of Volunteer Programs with administrative tasks, volunteer communications, and program development, and it will be your responsibility to help keep volunteers and staff informed of changes in the program.

Grants & Fundraising Interns

Partnership Research Assistant

This position is responsible for research to identify strategic partners, corporate businesses and key donors for Wine to Water. Using online research tools, the intern will gather important facts and data to create Strategic Partner Profiles and gather donor contact information. Using this research, the Intern will identify new partners and donors, evaluate alignments between Wine to Water and key corporations, and coordinate opportunities to utilize national speaking events to engage corporate partners and major donors.

Requirements:

  • College student or above
  • Strong ability to analyze information
  • Experience in research and data management
  • Precision with data-entry in a constituent database
  • Marketing, Business, Non-Profit Management majors preferred

Foundation & Research Assistant

The Foundation Assistant will be responsible for research to identify grant opportunities that further the mission of Wine to Water and our international programs. Using online research tools, the intern will be responsible for creating Foundation Profiles, identifying potential funding partners, and monitoring deadlines for funding opportunities. In addition to research, the intern will assist with proposal development, grant applications and a Foundations Calendar.
