Thank you for your support of the Wine To Water Program in Nepal!

Over the past six months, W|W Nepal’s phased project approach has been revolutionary in its’ application in both Raitole and Kalyanpur. The depth of our holistic WaSH program in the Madi Municipality has truly shown that these projects go much deeper than any well ever could. For the first time, our organization has entered Phase Three - the livelihood phase that follows water access and education - providing resources for empowerment through clean water. Our work in these communities has truly set the standard for all W|W projects moving forward.


In May, we completed a 71 tap-stand project that provides clean water for an entire community and one school, benefiting approximately 300 people. Moreover, this project complies with the government of Nepal’s new policy of “One House, One Tap” and was implemented through a six-month construction of “hardware” as listed below:

  • Drilled a 48-meter deep borehole to pump water into the reservoir tank through solar power.

  • Connected four solar panels of 315 watt power capacity, each which provided power to the solar pump of one horsepower.

  • Installed a reservoir tank of 16,000 litres, which stored water for 70 houses and one school.

  • Constructed 71 taps and yard connections in Raitole to comply with the Government of Nepal’s policy of  “One House, One Tap.”

  • Built eight Eco-San toilets for eight different households to comply with Nepal’s initiative of “Total Sanitation.” These toilets separate urine from feces so that the urine can be used as a fertilizer.

  • Installed an electric pump of two horsepower to provide the water available for 24 hours.

Beyond the hardware, the “software” components prove to be even more important in terms of long-term sustainability. Raitole recently formed their own Water User Group Committee, consisting of six women and three men, led by a female president, Narmaya Rai. This team is responsible for not only successfully accomplishing this project, but also for leading through ownership of the system in W|W’s absence.


An Operation and Maintenance Fund (O&M) was established to assist in the employment of a Village Maintenance Worker (VMW), Shankar Harijan. In addition, our team established the water tariff collection system to make the O&M fund self-sustaining. The Raitole community has already been collecting for this fund for the past five months. Paying for their water use has challenged the people of Raitole to realize the value of water conservation and preservation. Now, these people are more mindful of their water usage, cultivating an attitude change which is promoting a permanent behavioral change.  

Two trainings for the WUGC were conducted to strengthen the people’s capabilities in order to make this program more sustainable:

  • Pre-Construction Training - Prepared the WUGC for the upcoming project construction, account management, social mobilization, market survey, materials procurement and storage, stock maintenance, and skilled and unskilled labor mobilization.

  • Post-Construction Training - Trained the WUGC on the water tariff collection, O&M fund management, technical sustainability, financial sustainability, and VMW employment.

In addition, one social Audit was conducted to maintain the transparency of the project’s estimated budget and the actual budget spent. One unpublished Healthy Home Survey was also carried out, which proved:

  • 32 houses have green stickers

  • 34 houses have yellow stickers

  • 4 house have red stickers

  • This survey will be taken again soon to show the growth of the homes in terms of healthy sanitation and hygiene practices.

In the next few months, the Madi Municipality and Ward Office have agreed to support the expansion of Raitole to reach eastern and western clusters of Raitole, bringing water to more than 90 households. This will allow the project to reach 160 households, the most a W|W project has ever reached. More so, we're implementing livelihood trainings and technical support in commercial farming. We're empowering the WUGC to take the lead on this project and create these changes for themselves.

We say that this is our project, but this project belongs to the people of Raitole. Truly, they are the ones hosting us. By continuing to support Raitole, we are empowering them to take ownership to sustain their community for years to come.


Following Raitole’s standard, we began working in Kalyanpur in August of 2018. We are still initiating a 98 tap-stand project in a community of around 500 people.

So far, the hardware components of Raitole are evident in the following:

  • Development of two natural spring sources by constructing concrete chambers.

  • Construction of infiltration gallery (i.e. sump well) and two connecting wells. The first is one foot deep and the second is five.  

  • Completion of Gabion wall for sump-well protection.

In terms of software, the Water User Group Committee of Kalyanpur was formed with eleven members in total. The GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) was considered as a high priority while forming this WUGC. This WUGC is led by a male president, Mr. Gyan Bahadur Kafle, who is about 70 years old and has become an exemplary figure and role model in the community.

Along with the formation of the WUGC of Kalyanpur, our team established an Operation and Maintenance Fund (O&M fund) and conducted one Pre-Construction training for WUGC. Our work in Kalyanpur has only just begun and we look forward to all that is to come for this community.  

WaSH Consortium

W|W Nepal has joined in a WaSH Consortium with Splash Nepal and the Rotary Club of Chitwan to reach 33 schools in the Madi Municipality with clean water. We have only started the conversations on what the expectations of the partnership will look like and we will continue planning accordingly for implementation in the next few months.

The past six months have shown tremendous growth for our organization and our program in Nepal. In meeting the communities where they are at initially with an asset-based approach to development, our phased-series has shown success in terms of empowerment, ownership and opportunity for the people of Raitole, Kalyanpur and all of the Madi Municipality.

Field Note #207: The Lasting Impact in Dahakhani

One year after the completion of the Dahakhani water project, this Nepali village is flourishing as the clean water keeps flowing.

Before clean water came to Dahakhani, villagers had to walk at least half an hour to reach the closest water source. Mothers would wait in line with their children for long lengths of time to get safe water for their families’ daily use. After filling all the containers they could possibly carry, they hike with their heavy gallons in-tow back down the lengthy trail to the village. Not only was the task time-consuming, but the water source could not support Dahakhani throughout the entire year…
