Field Note #139: Being an Extra Hand in Cambodia
I'm sitting in the airport waiting to board a flight to Cambodia. Why? Because I have the opportunity to go serve with Wine To Water, an amazing organization that my church has been supporting financially for several years. I know there's a lot of negative opinions on international volunteer trips, and a lot of that is valid. Before I start my journey, I want you all to know why I'm doing this. It's not for attention, or a vacation. It's not to "save" people. It's to provide a community with clean and safe water. Something that most of us take for granted on a daily basis. The reason I chose to do this trip with Wine To Water is because they serve well. They partner with local organizations, they educate and empower communities, they maintain their projects year after year and their volunteers simply go to work, to be extra hands. They volunteer to get more done than the ground organizations could do on their own.
Now, I know some of you will have negative opinions on this, and that's ok, let's talk about them when I get home. But for now, know that I did my research, and that this organization is close to my heart. I support them financially on a regular basis, and this is me helping in another way.
