Field Note #134: Finding the DR Back Home

The cool thing about transition is the choice it offers you. To either forget, be bitter about or appreciate the beauty in what you're leaving behind. The choice of how you're going to let your experience shape your next season. It's fun to see myself growing up, how transition comes more easily than it used to and how all of the little blessings of living in the Dominican Republic didn't get left behind. Instead, I can pick them out in a crowd. Like countless babies being loved on and children running free; or how the woman who should be a stranger comes up and starts dancing with us, but mostly how the top priority tonight is to be together. I have learned to love my home through watching my Dominican family love theirs, and that is a beautiful thing.
